Michael Giles - Solicitor

Michael recently joined Stacks/Goudkamp’s Newcastle office, specialising in Compensation law. Originally from Utah, he completed a Masters of Public Health in Los Angeles. Since then Michael has travelled extensively, working with NGO’s in many developing countries, including Somalia, Rwanda, Cambodia, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, among others. This included providing relief and assistance to communities in the midst of civil strife. Arriving in Australia in 2005, Michael managed a crisis centre for homeless youth before going on to gain his law qualifications at Newcastle University. He was admitted as a solicitor earlier this year. With a wealth of experience in human rights and social justice issues, Michael is passionate about assisting people to receive the opportunities they deserve.

Michael is currently assisting Tom Goudkamp in a class action against the British Government. This includes interviewing Australian military veterans who were exposed to radiation as a result of British nuclear bomb testing in Australia in the 1950’s and 60’s, and their widows and families.

Michael is experienced dealing with a variety of groups of people. His role while working overseas included communicating with people from all social levels, from Ambassadors and Ministers, to illiterate and poverty-stricken members of communities. As a result, Michael can break down difficult legal concepts into everyday language. He takes the time to really listen to clients and involve them in the process.

Outside of work, Michael is kept pretty busy with trips to the beach, park and harbour with his two young children. Naturally community-oriented, he is always ready to get involved in a good cause.

Michael’s commitment to his clients, and his vigorous and determined approach to every matter he handles, has quickly gained him the respect of his colleagues.
