Stage presence is not something that newly-elected Australian Lawyers Alliance NSW president, Jnana Gumbert, shies away from; theatre and public speaking have long coursed in her veins.
“I grew up performing in various productions and competing in speech and drama eisteddfods. At one stage I even considered an acting career,” Ms Gumbert said.
“But I guess it some ways, I was born to be a lawyer. I grew up in a family where both parents and much of my extended family were lawyers, and I think I absorbed a lot of legal training from an early age. Working as a litigation lawyer specialising in personal injuries, I have all the drama and excitement, but also the satisfaction of knowing I am achieving real results that improve people’s lives,” she said.
As of July 1, Ms Gumbert also becomes a director of the Stacks Goudkamp law firm acknowledging her particular expertise in handling catastrophic injury claims arising from motor vehicle accidents, public liability and medical negligence cases for individuals, not just in Australia, but also internationally.
She is also due to complete her University of Sydney Master of Laws degree this month – something she describes as being one of the most valuable things she has ever done.
Jnana is the sort of person who pulls up her sleeves and gets things done, having worked as Australian Lawyers Alliance secretary, prior to becoming NSW president and also as branch delegate for the Alliance Precedent magazine editorial committee.
“I love being a member of an organisation like the ALA that is always willing to say and do whatever is necessary to ensure that justice is done.” Ms Gumbert said.
“Some of the things I hope to achieve in my presidency include, enhancing the current tort system to better sustain personal injury victims throughout their lives and support the Alliance in its mission to protect the rights of all vulnerable individuals in our society.”
