Rita is a personal injury lawyer at Stacks Goudkamp. She was admitted as a solicitor in July 2009, and speaks conversational Egyptian Arabic.
Rita previously worked at Stacks as a paralegal and solicitor, before moving to LexisNexis to perform roles including legal editor, practice area manager, commercial content strategist and content strategy manager. She rejoined Stacks Goudkamp in October 2017, bringing with her valuable skills in legal practice and commercial, publishing and information services, as well as strong leadership skills gained through her management positions.
Rita’s main focus is on motor vehicle accident claims, but she is also experienced in medical negligence and public liability, and some product liability. She also has experience in sexual abuse cases, and is hoping to extend her skills into the superannuation, life insurance and TPD areas as well.
Rita has excellent attention to detail and legal writing skills, and is experienced in developing case strategy and making tactical decisions. She is compassionate and determined, with strong active listening skills and an unwillingness to give up.
Some of interesting legal work she has been involved in includes working as a junior solicitor on a case involving a man who was rendered paraplegic in a motorcycle accident. The case was difficult on liability, but achieved a good result in terms of securing compensation for his past and future losses.
Similarly, Rita worked on a case involving another motorcycle accident, with this client losing his leg. His work very much depended on him being physically active, and it was to his credit that he managed to adapt to relying on a prosthesis and to continue in his very demanding role. The compensation secured in this case meant that he could continue to receive the support and equipment he needs to be able to live a fulfilling life despite the amputation.
Rita also worked on a medical negligence case involving a GP who misdiagnosed bacterial meningitis, resulting in her client suffering brain damage and losing his hearing. In this case, the team gathered strong and indisputable evidence not only about the doctor’s negligence, but also about the permanent and profound impact of the injuries on her client’s life. The compensation he received meant that he could focus on adapting to his new life with disabilities and could receive the support, services and equipment he required.
Recently, Rita has worked on a public liability case involving an elderly man who suffered injuries in a fall at a shopping centre. The evidence was heavily in favour of the defendants, and it was expected that we would need to pull out of the case and accept a verdict that would result in no compensation to Rita’s client. However, due to the thorough preparation of the case and superlative negotiation skills, Stacks managed to secure compensation that would allow the client to have urgently needed surgery.
Outside of work, Rita loves keeping fit by regularly going to the gym, running and hiking. She has completed two half marathons, as well as the Oxfam Trailwalker, which is a 100km hike for charity. Rita is also learning to salsa, and loves seeing live music, movies and other shows. She enjoys travelling and has visited over 25 countries, with plans to visit many more.
An active participant in the community, Rita volunteers for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT by providing support with events and selling merchandise. When not participating herself in the Oxfam Trailwalker event, she volunteers to support others who are. She has also worked as a volunteer for the Australian Human Rights Commission, doing research and content development work.
